A bicycle is more than just a means of transport. For children from 8 to 18 years old, cycling is a way to participate, feel freedom and discover the world. Unfortunately, buying a bike for 1 in 9 children is often too expensive and impossible.
The ANWB believes that every child has the right to have a bicycle to be able to participate in society. And dos do we….
The ANWB started the Children’s Bicycle Plan in September 2015. With this initiative they collect bicycles together with their members, refurbish them with the help of volunteers in workshops throughout the Netherlands and through partners They ensure that they end up in the right place.
Since the start in 2015:
They have collected 15,000 bicycles;
there are more than 30 workshops throughout the Netherlands where bicycles are refurbished;
more than 120 volunteers volunteer several times a month to collect, pick up and refurbish bicycles.
The Children’s Bicycle Plan cooperates with other agencies. With e.g. Stichting Leergeld, Kringloop Nederland, Kindpakket and Nationaal Fonds Kinderhulp we make sure that the bikes reach the children who need them the most and for whom it is not possible to buy a bicycle ourselves.
There are social worksplaces in the country where the ANWB ensures that the bicycles are refurbished to safe bicycles. With these workplaces they also look at how these bicycles can be maintained so that children can continue to cycle.
Shimano is going to collaborate with ANWB Kinderfietsplan in 2021 because we believe in their principles and believes. Shimano is going to set up several training inspirience days ( Nunspeet Eindhoven, Valkenburg ) for the project volunteers to share there knowledge. During the year the employees are going to organize several internal events to collect children’s bicycles (from their private Shimano shed’s and attics).
